What is ExpertNet?
ExpertNet finds the IISc faculty, alumni and startups best matched to a research problem or set of expertise keywords. Your text is broken into expertise areas, and every faculty member, alumnus and startup is ranked on how well their own tags cover those areas.
- Search by a problem statement or by keywords. Use Refine to add or remove expertise tags and re-rank.
- Faculty / Alumni / Startups tabs, each with Sort and filters (Department, Position, Interest, Label).
- Cards or List – switch the layout with the toggle above the results (your choice is remembered).
- Evidence (flask icon on a faculty card) shows the patents, posters, papers and theses that support the match.
- Contact details: email, Centrex extension (2293 prefix) and direct line. The IISc Directory is used first; grey text means it came from the faculty member's web pages instead.
- Hover a name for the expertise summary. Research Tags & Expert Availability (below the results) is collapsed; open it to see who covers each tag.
- Find by name (top-right) opens a separate exact-name search for faculty.
Example searches
Keywords: "machine learning", "sustainable energy"
Problems: "Data protection in permissioned blockchains using privilege separation"
"Developing sustainable materials for aerospace applications that withstand extreme temperatures"
Where the data comes from
- Faculty profiles: IRINS / Vidwan profiles and the faculty members' own web pages.
- Publications: Scopus papers (titles, abstracts, keywords) and Google Scholar profiles.
- Patents and posters: IISc patent records and research-poster collections.
- Theses: IISc doctoral and master's theses, linked to the faculty who supervised them (advisor name matching).
- Contacts: IISc Directory & Planner 2025-26; where a person is not listed there, contact details from their web pages.
- Startups: FSID incubated startups, the founders list, the conclave showcase and faculty-founder lists, plus their websites. Co-founders are de-duplicated across these sources.
- Alumni: the FSID Alumni Engagement Form responses, with their stated interests and LinkedIn links.
- Tags and summaries are generated by AI (Gemini) from the above and ranked with sentence-embedding similarity (all-MiniLM-L6-v2). Treat them as guidance, not verified fact.
Missing data does not mean absence: for example, "no theses" or "no patents" means none were found in these sources.
